Focus feels like a matter of discipline, but underneath it is a set of neural circuits governed by dopamine, acetylcholine, and the prefrontal cortex.
The brain's attention system has two modes: a focused, task-positive network and a diffuse, default-mode network. Deep work requires the first; creativity often emerges from the second. Learning to move deliberately between them is a skill.
Sleep is the foundation. A single night of poor sleep measurably reduces prefrontal function, the seat of sustained attention. No technique compensates for chronic sleep debt.
Finally, novelty and difficulty modulate dopamine, which in turn gates attention. This is why the right level of challenge feels effortless while boredom feels impossible.
